The General Mills (NYSE:GIS) announced today that it has improved the health profile of products General Mills first started back in 2005 to track and quantify health improvements. Between the years of 2005 and 2011, the company improved the health profile of 64% of the US retail sales volume. They have added whole grains, fiber and calcium, and reduce calories, sugar, sodium and trans fats.
The original reason for General Mills product improvements were driven by a desire to be a noticeable healthy and nutritional leader in the US retail market. General Mills has improve the nutritional profile of more than 600 different products in United States in various ways. These include formulating new products with more natural ingredients, reducing the calories fat, sugar and sodium by 10% or more, creating new products that meets internal requirements, and increasing by 10% or more the beneficial nutrients such as whole grains, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
General Mills created a “Health Metric,” at the General Mills Bell Institute of health and nutrition. In 2009, General Mills announced it would reduce sugar and all of its cereals advertised to children under 12 to single-digit grams of sugar per serving. Today, General Mills kids cereals are 10 g of sugar or less per serving down from 11 to 15 g of sugar and 2007.
They also planning to release some innovative, healthful products in fiscal 2012. Fiber One 80 calorie cereal will provide 40% of the daily value of fiber and calcium and 25% of the daily value of vitamins and minerals including iron, vitamin B1, B2 and B6, folic acid and saying, per serving. Yoplait Light with Granola will be launched in July and will be a fruit on the bottom yogurt with a lead filled with 100% natural granola. Flavors will include strawberry, blueberry, peach and cherry.
